2020 was a rough year for everyone and after that unpredictable year we’ve had, the idea of making a New Year’s resolution for 2021 seems a bit far-fetched. Your plans for 2021 are going to be a lot different than what you used to have.

This year, how about filling your resolution list with easy, good-for-you goals? Instead of your typical diet, exercise or financial overhaul resolution, how about trying something different? A fresh focus for the new year could be health, mental wellbeing, and connection. Here are some ideas that will inspire 2021 to be a better year for your mind, soul and body.

Try something new

Out with the old, in with the new. Try something new means not taking you out of your comfort zone but rather to have more fun. You can try listening to a new song once a day, maybe of a different genre than you usually listen to. Or, put on your apron and try to cook a meal on your own (if you eat takeouts often).

Join a club

Instead of starting a new hobby, how about joining a new club? You can meet new people at the same time and have digital meetups or chat groups.

Get close with nature

It’s good to get out once in a while and just smell the fresh air. Nature is uplifting and you need not go far to find it. Take a walk in the park (if the situation permits) or just a walk around your garden. Walking outside helps improve your wellbeing, decrease stress, and improves cognition, while getting a dose of vitamin D.

Turn off your devices

Admit that you are one of those who cannot leave their smartphones even for a minute. Even a quick glance at the news will lead to hours checking Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or even YouTube. Sometimes looking at the news brings doom and can even spoil your day. Instead, having an optimistic mindset helps one to cope better during these times. Try to stay away from your device, even for 30 minutes a day to start and just do something else like taking a walk or reading a book. Embrace the calmness and relax.

Do an act of kindness

Being kind makes people happier, decreases stress and improves wellbeing. Doing acts of kindness does not mean you need to go out. It can be in the form of a donation to charity, helping your neighbour or if situation permits, volunteer with a charity organization.

Say no to food waste

With the pandemic raging, many jobs are lost and people are starving. Instead of throwing food out, pledge to start the new year by reducing waste. Plan your meals in advance, buy only what you need and don’t throw your leftovers. Freeze overripe fruits for smoothies or muffins and make fertilizers out of fruit peels and discarded vegetables.

Whatever your resolutions you have for 2021, pursue your goals in small steps to make it fit with your busy lifestyle.
