When those sweet cravings hit, but you want something healthier, how about some sweet potato doughnuts or Kuih Keria? Savoury, delicious and sinful, it sure hits the spot. It brings back memories of those times when you can find them aplenty at the pasar malam or night market.

Made from mashed sweet potato mixed with plain flour and tapioca flour, it has a soft texture and a sugar frost coating that brings delight with each bite. The next time you have access to sweet potatoes in the kitchen, try this healthy option.

Here’s how you can make this at home:

Ingredients:

For the doughnuts:

  • 500g sweet potato, cut into cubes and steamed until soft
  • ¾ cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Oil for frying

 
Sugar frost:

  • 200g sugar
  • 70ml water

Method:

  1. Mash the steamed sweet potatoes until fine. Mash it while it is still hot then leave it aside to cool.
  2. Add in the flour and knead well till it forms a soft dough.
  3. Divide the dough into equal balls, shape each ball into a flattened mound and make a hole in the centre with your thumb.
  4. Deep fry the rings in hot oil over medium heat on both sides until golden brown.

  5. Drain and set aside.
  6. To make the frost, boil the sugar and water in a large pan or wok till the syrup bubbles and thickens.
  7. Turn off the heat and add the sweet potato rings into the pan. Coat the rings with the syrup until it is well coated.
  8. Shake off access frost and serve.
